Obama At Invesco Field

obama at invesco fieldThe recent good news of Barack Obama holding his Democratic party acceptance speech at Invesco field in Denver made me pretty happy. It will be so much fun to sit in my recliner in my underwear, wearing my homemade Obama mask while eating tacos as Obama gives a soaring, uplifting speech in front over 75,000 people. I am so glad that finally in my lifetime there is a presidential candidate who has a flair for drama and romance and maybe even a little bit of fun. Already I am hearing the detractors and those saying Obama is indirectly and unrightfully comparing himself to JFK who gave a speech in a packed LA Coliseum in the 60's. Or they are saying he is being egotistical, comparing himself to Martin Luther King by holdiing this event on the anniversary of King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech. And of course there are the inevitable comparisons to this rally at Invesco Field reminding people of Hitler and it really amazes me how there will always be people who see something BAD somehow about millions of Americans finally actually LIKING a presidential candidate and getting EXCITED about them and the fact that young Americans actually CARE about the political process this time around.

I am so glad I am not some crabby, sour conservative or disgruntled, sour-grapes-eating Hillary supporter who actually sees something BAD in all of this, Barack is just giving the fans what they want. I firmly believe that MOST of America wants to see this huge event. They want Barack to be larger than life and Barack is trying his hardest to live up to their expectations. He will surely disappointment at least to some degree; he is human and he is a politician. But at least he is trying to at least create the APPEARANCE OF POTENTIAL GREATNESS. He is providing good theater and getting people excited by making this acceptance speech a real event, something we can all look back upon and remember fondly and he is helping to contribute to the great mythology and lore which is the United States of America.

I am an Obama supporter but defintely do not mindlessly "Drink the Kool-Aid" (a phrase I actually hate, btw). In the course of making my Obama art and my silly fake O.T. Underwear "photo-ops" I actually find myself poking fun at him alot which I guess is reflective of some of the doubts I have. But I'll be damned if I let any lingering worries or fears let me turn pessimistic about freedom in America again as I was before Barack appeared. I refuse to let the mud-slinging crab-apples ruin my good time. I will sit in my underwear eating tacos on August 28th while I watch Obama give his amazing speech at Invesco Field and I will appreciate it for its awesome historical significance and yes, just HOPE. I will just HOPE that Obama wins the election and HOPE he is a good president. In Obama I see both the potential for awe-inspiring greatness and disappointing lameness but in the meantime something he definitely does offer us is great drama, excitement and stimulation of the American imagination. For now it is the journey and the mystery of the unknown which I delight in. I relish in the tingle I feel when I hear Barack speak, that fuzzy wuzzy feeling of love in my blood that whispers to me and makes me ask myself, "Am I actually feeling proud to be an American again?"
